When one goes for a makeover, there are several specialists that they can go to – hair stylists, wardrobe stylists, a cosmetic surgeon or a dermatologist Fitness Power Club. However, a dentist is probably the last person you’d consider going to for a makeover but when it comes to doing a smile makeover, a cosmetic dentist is your best bet and perhaps your only bet to get the smile you want and need.

A smile makeover or a smile design, means a dentist checks on the position of a patient’s teeth and how their teeth is framed by their lips. Sometimes, great smiles don’t only mean whiter teeth but may also require a little adjustment in the structure of teeth and gums as well. A prime example would be if too much of your gums show when you smile, which can be fixed by undergoing a gum lift or what is technically referred to as a crown lengthening.

While it may sound painful, a gum lift is actually an outpatient procedure that can be done at the dentist’s office with little pain. It involves very minor surgery, where the gums are pushed up to show more of the teeth. Another smile makeover procedure involves shaping and lengthening your teeth, rounding up the edges to make you look years younger. Because we spend a lifetime chewing, it is inevitable that we wear our teeth down and even if you get the most expensive facelifts known to man, it won’t look right when your teeth are worn down and can in fact, add rather than subtract years to your appearance.

As for shaping your teeth, dentists can bond a resin or porcelain veneer to its front surface, improving the size, shape, color and length of your teeth to make them look white and even. If you’ve ever wondered why your favorite celebrities’ teeth and smile look like a million bucks, you now know why. Porcelain veneers are especially preferred over resin because they resist stains better and mimic the light-reflecting properties of natural teeth more closely.

If you’re a Hollywood A-lister, God forbid the paparazzi catch you with brown stains on your teeth at any given day and these veneers make sure you’re always ready for your close-up anytime, anywhere. However, A-lister or not, a smile makeover won’t be the dazzling success you want it to be without going through some critical stages.

First off, it must all be carefully planned by discussing with the dentist your complete medical history, health concerns and objectives. While a smile is a smile is a smile, people have varying concepts about what a great smile should look like but one thing that it does have to be is that it should conform to or complement the patient’s facial structure, eyes and skin. Your bite as well is a major consideration as you can put porcelain on everything easily but when you don’t get your bite fixed first, everything can break down, rendering your makeover a moot point.

The next stage will be the oral examination, wherein the dentist will determine the reasons why you have this smile and how you can improve it based on those reasons. This is the best time to ask questions and raise any concerns as your dentist tries to understand and seek factors that affect your smile like any type of periodontal disease, nutritional deficiencies, accidental injuries that you may have experienced and even your genetic makeup to solve as many problems as possible in order to achieve the best results possible.

Third, would be the treatment plan stage, which will be the result of your dentist’s careful planning and examination. This will outline the procedures that need to be done on your teeth to achieve the best possible smile for you and this is also the stage where everything is explained to you from what you can expect to the functional enhancements or improvements you will be experiencing once your new smile is in place.

The fourth stage will be either the hardest thing you undergo or the easiest as this involves the implementation or application of treatments, including preliminary treatments, temporary restorations that will serve as test drives for your new smile and also to gauge your comfort level to the new functions and appearance of your smile. This stage is important as this is where all the necessary adjustments will be made before the final restorations are put in.

And last and most certainly not the least, your final restorations will be put in and you will be advised by the dentist on how to take proper care of them from whitening to maintaining them. Minor adjustments can still be made, including in the shading of your veneers for example, if you find that you are not that happy with them
